GISEMENTS DE FER RUBANE " BIF "

Les gisements de fer rubané ou BIF (banded iron formation : formations ferrugineuses rubanées) sont constitués d’une alternance centimétrique de lits de silice (quartz) et de lits de minéraux de fer (essentiellement hématite, magnétite) (Fig.1). Ils représentent 90% de la production mondiale de fer.                           Fig. (1) : BIF d’Afrique du Sud. Les lits gris, plus ou moins brillants, à éclat plus ou moins métallique, sont constitués d'hématite (Fe 2 O 3 ) quasiment pure. Altérées ou hydratées, ces couches d'oxydes ferriques peuvent se colorer en brun-rouge foncé. Les lits roses ou « rouge brique » sont constitués de silice, plus ou moins colorée en rose ou rouge par des traces d'hématite.   Ils sont d’ âge précambrien (archéen-protérozoïque inférieur) ; le développement maximal ayant lieu entre 2.7 et 1.9 Ga (Fig.2).
